When you see dating apps listed as Top Ranked on DateMantra, their order isn’t decided by an editor simply choosing which app should come first.
Our rankings combine three different signals: DateMantra’s editorial assessment, ratings submitted by users, and community upvotes and downvotes. The aim is to combine our own research with the experiences and opinions of people who actually use dating apps.
We deliberately keep these signals visible separately so you can see where a ranking comes from and make your own judgement.
What We Consider
DateMantra Editorial Assessment
Our editorial rating reflects DateMantra’s assessment of a dating app.
Depending on the app and the features available to us, we may consider areas such as:
- Features and overall functionality
- Ease of use and design
- Profile creation and discovery
- Matching and search options
- Messaging and communication features
- Safety, privacy and verification features
- Free versus paid functionality
- Subscription pricing and other costs
- Availability across web, iOS and Android
- The type of dating or relationships the service is designed for
- Overall user experience
An editorial rating represents DateMantra’s assessment, not the opinion of the app’s users.
Apps change frequently, so our reviews and ratings may also change when significant new features, pricing structures, policies or other aspects of a service change.
User Star Ratings
People who submit a published review can give an app a star rating.
These ratings provide a different perspective from our editorial assessment. An app that looks excellent when evaluated feature-by-feature may receive a different response from the people actually using it.
Only ratings attached to published, moderated user reviews are included. Ratings connected to pending, rejected, removed or identified spam reviews do not count.
Why the Number of Reviews Matters
A simple average can be misleading when very few people have submitted ratings.
For example, an app with two 5-star reviews technically has a 5.0 average. That doesn’t necessarily provide stronger evidence of user satisfaction than an app with hundreds of reviews averaging 4.6 stars.
For ranking purposes, DateMantra therefore treats ratings based on very small samples cautiously.
As more genuine reviews are collected, the user-rating signal can become more representative of the wider DateMantra community.
The ordinary user rating and number of reviews remain visible so readers can see the underlying information themselves.
Community Votes
DateMantra members can also quickly express their opinion of an app using upvotes and downvotes.
Voting is intentionally simpler than writing a full review. It gives people who have an opinion about an app another way to participate without requiring them to write a detailed review.
Both upvotes and downvotes are displayed.
As with star ratings, we don’t assume that a tiny number of votes represents the wider community. An app receiving five upvotes and no downvotes should not automatically leap above an established app with hundreds or thousands of votes.
The strength of the community-voting signal therefore takes the amount of voting activity into account.
One Active Vote Per Member
Voting requires a DateMantra account.
Each member can have one active vote per dating app.
You can:
- Upvote an app
- Downvote an app
- Change an upvote to a downvote, or vice versa
- Click your existing vote again to remove it
Changing or removing a vote updates the community totals accordingly.
This system is designed to make voting easy while preventing the same account from repeatedly voting for or against the same app.
Three Signals, Kept Separate
DateMantra uses editorial assessments, user ratings and community votes when determining ranking order, but we intentionally do not combine them into a single public rating.
On our review pages you may therefore see information such as:
Editorial Rating: 4.6/5
User Rating: 4.3/5 from 187 reviews
Community: 342 upvotes · 61 downvotes
These numbers mean different things.
The editorial rating represents our assessment. The user rating represents ratings attached to published reviews. Community voting provides a quicker indication of member sentiment.
Displaying them separately makes disagreements visible rather than hiding them inside one apparently precise score.
For example, our editors might rate an app highly while its users give it a much lower rating. We think that difference is useful information.
How the Top Ranked Order Works
The Top Ranked order considers all three signals rather than relying entirely on any single one.
The ranking system is designed to prevent small samples from having disproportionate influence. This means that a new app with two 5-star reviews or several early upvotes should not automatically outrank an established app supported by substantially more community feedback.
As more legitimate reviews and votes are collected, the user and community signals can carry greater informational value.
The ranking order can therefore change over time as:
- New reviews are published
- Existing reviews are moderated or removed
- Members cast, change or remove votes
- Our editorial assessments are updated
- Dating apps substantially change their products or services
A position on DateMantra should therefore be viewed as a current ranking rather than a permanent award.
Rankings Are Not the Same as Recommendations for Everyone
There is no dating app that will necessarily be the right choice for every person.
Different services are designed around different audiences and relationship goals. Someone looking for marriage may value completely different features from someone interested in casual dating, LGBTQ+ dating, faith-based dating or meeting people within a particular community.
Our rankings provide one way of comparing services, but we encourage readers to look at the individual ratings, reviews, features, pricing and intended audience before deciding which services suit them.
Preventing Ranking Manipulation
User-generated rankings only work when participation is genuine.
DateMantra may investigate unusual voting or reviewing activity, including patterns that appear automated, coordinated, duplicated or intended primarily to manipulate an app’s position.
We may remove or exclude fraudulent, spam or otherwise inauthentic activity from ranking calculations.
Creating multiple accounts, using automated systems or coordinating artificial votes or reviews to manipulate rankings is not permitted.
We don’t guarantee that every attempt at manipulation will be detected immediately, but we may retrospectively remove activity when we identify it.
User Review Moderation
Submitting a review does not guarantee publication.
Reviews may be moderated to remove spam, duplicate submissions, irrelevant material, abusive content or other material that does not meet our publishing standards.
Moderation is not intended to remove a review simply because it is positive or negative.
Where appropriate, both favourable and critical experiences can contribute to user ratings.
Only reviews that are published are included in the user-rating component of our rankings.
Commercial Relationships Do Not Buy Ranking Positions
DateMantra may earn money through advertising, affiliate partnerships, sponsored placements or other commercial relationships.
Payment does not buy a higher editorial rating or a higher position in our Top Ranked results.
Where content is sponsored or advertising, we aim to identify it appropriately.
An affiliate relationship may mean DateMantra receives compensation if a reader follows a link or completes an eligible action. That commercial relationship does not determine the editorial score assigned to an app.
Ownership and Conflicts of Interest
Transparency is especially important when DateMantra has a relationship with a company we review.
Where DateMantra and a reviewed service share ownership or another material relationship, we disclose that relationship on the relevant review.
For example, NRI Dating and DateMantra are operated by the same ownership group.
NRI Dating can still be reviewed and included in DateMantra rankings, but that relationship is disclosed so readers can take it into account when evaluating our editorial assessment.
User reviews and community votes remain separate from DateMantra’s editorial rating.
Sponsored Content and Advertising
Advertising and sponsored content are separate from our normal editorial review process.
An advertiser may pay DateMantra for advertising exposure, but that does not entitle the advertiser to:
- A particular editorial rating
- Positive user reviews
- Additional community votes
- Removal of legitimate criticism
- A guaranteed Top Ranked position
Where commercial content could reasonably be confused with editorial content, we aim to label it clearly.
Rankings Can Change
Dating apps are constantly changing.
Prices increase or decrease. Free features become paid features. Verification systems are introduced. Apps redesign their matching systems, introduce new safety tools or change the markets they serve.
Community opinion changes too.
For these reasons, DateMantra rankings are dynamic. An app that ranks first today is not guaranteed to remain there.
We periodically review our editorial assessments and may update a review when significant changes occur.
No Ranking System Is Perfect
Dating experiences are highly personal.
Location, age, gender, sexual orientation, relationship goals, cultural background and the number of active users in a particular area can all affect someone’s experience with an app.
A dating app that works extremely well for one person may work poorly for another.
Our ranking methodology is therefore intended to provide useful comparative information, not to predict an individual’s experience.
We encourage readers to consider the underlying editorial assessment, user reviews and community voting rather than relying only on the position of an app in a ranking.
Corrections and Updates
We want our reviews and rankings to reflect accurate and current information.
If an app has changed significantly, information in a review is incorrect, or you believe activity on a listing is being manipulated, you can contact DateMantra and bring it to our attention.
Where appropriate, we may investigate and update the relevant information.
